Summer Wars (サマーウォーズ Samā Wōzu) is a 2009 Japanese animated science fiction romance film directed by Mamoru Hosoda and written by Satoko Okudera from a story by Hosoda. The film was produced by Madhouse and released by Warner Bros. Pictures Japan. The film stars the voices of Ryunosuke Kamiki, Nanami Sakuraba, Mitsuki Tanimura and Sumiko Fuji. Set in a territory governed by a clan in Ueda, the film's story focuses on Kenji Koiso, a timid eleventh-grade math genius who has been falsely implicated in the hacking of a virtual world and, with the aid of upper-classman Natsuki Shinohara's extensive family, must prevent the real and computer-simulated worlds from colliding.
Kenji Koiso (Ryunosuke Kamiki/Michael Sinterniklaas) is a young high school student with a gift in mathematics, working as a part-time moderator in the massive computer-simulated virtual reality world OZ along with his friend Takashi Sakuma (Takahiro Yokokawa/Todd Haberkorn). When Kenji's friend Natsuki Shinohara (Nanami Sakuraba/Brina Palencia) offers him to participate in celebrating the 90th birthday of her great-grandmother, Sakae Jinnouchi (Sumiko Fuji/Pam Dougherty), Natsuki takes him to Sakae's estate in Ueda, Nagano Prefecture. Much to Kenji's surprise, he is introduced at the Jinnouchi family house as Natsuki's fiancé.
